Thousands of people love the Adirondacks for its tranquil beauty, pristine woods and pure, clear lakes and streams. Given that, it may seem incongruous for it to be the site for one of the biggest motorcycle touring rallies in the United States.

When winter's grip finally loosens on the Adirondack Mountains, dedicated motorcyclists begin planning their annual pilgrimage to Lake George, New York, for Americade—one of the nation's largest and most beloved motorcycle events.

This week-long celebration of motorcycle culture transforms the quaint village of Lake George and the surrounding area into a dynamic hub of chrome, leather, camaraderie, and a community of motorcycle enthusiasts who also appreciate the beauty of the Adirondack Park.

An event that appeals to all motorcyclists.

Americade is not your typical motorcycle rally. Unlike events that cater primarily to one brand or style of riding, Americade welcomes all motorcyclists – from cruiser enthusiasts to sport bike riders, tourers to adventure bikers.

Back in the day when it was still called “Aspencade East” (more on that later), I was surprised to learn a college roommate’s parents from Westport, CT (home of Paul Newman, Martha Stewart, Robert Redford, and F. Scott Fitzgerald) regularly attended the event.

Americade emphasizes its scenic riding and family-friendly activities rather than the rowdier aspects sometimes associated with motorcycle gatherings.

It's often described as a "motorcycle touring" event rather than a rally.

Depending on the source, its said Americade attendance regularly exceeds 100,000 participants annually.

Americade has earned its reputation as the Northeast's premier motorcycle event. While most attendees come from the eastern United States and Canada, the rally's fame draws riders from across the country and overseas.

The place to be in the first week of June.

Americade traditionally takes place during the first week of June, strategically scheduled when the Adirondack weather is typically pleasant but before the peak summer tourist season. For 2025, the event is slated for June 2-7.

The rally is headquartered in Lake George Village, the picturesque resort town cradled at the southern end of Lake George in New York's Adirondack region.

The location offers the perfect blend of amenities and access to some of the most scenic riding routes in the northeastern United States. The official event center is located at Fort William Henry, a historic site overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Lake George.

An exciting array of events and activities.

What makes Americade unique is its diverse array of activities catering to virtually every motorcycling interest:

  • Guided Rides: Perhaps the heart of Americade is its organized rides through the stunning Adirondack landscape. Routes range from leisurely cruises along Lake George to challenging mountain roads winding through the High Peaks region. Expert guides lead these tours, pointing out scenic vistas and historical sites.

  • Americade Expo: This massive motorcycle trade show spans multiple venues around Lake George. Hundreds of vendors showcase the latest in motorcycles, gear, accessories, and aftermarket products. Major manufacturers typically bring demo fleets, allowing attendees to test-ride new models.

  • Entertainment: Evening activities include live music, motorcycle-themed films, a professional rodeo, and boat cruises on Lake George.

  • Seminars: Educational presentations cover topics like motorcycle maintenance, safety equipment, long-distance touring strategies, and travel photography.

Americade’s roots.

Americade's origins trace back to 1983 when motorcycle enthusiast Bill Dutcher organized the first event called "Aspencade East." Dutcher, who had participated in the Aspencade rally in New Mexico, saw an opportunity to create a similar event for East Coast riders.

The inaugural rally attracted roughly 2,000 motorcyclists. Dutcher's vision differed from existing rallies; he wanted to create a more inclusive event focused on touring and education rather than competition or wild partying.

Dutcher’s approach struck a chord with many riders seeking a family-friendly motorcycle event.

In 1986, the rally was renamed "Americade" to establish its own identity.

Under Dutcher's leadership, the event grew steadily over the decades, eventually becoming the largest touring rally in the world, according to many industry observers.

In 2014, Bill Dutcher passed the torch to his son Christian, who continues to lead the event while maintaining its founding principles.

Creating a positive impact in the Adirondacks.

Beyond the economic boost Americade brings to the Lake George region, the rally has established a strong tradition of giving back. Over its four-decade history, Americade has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various charities.

The rally supports local community initiatives, including funding for first responders, educational scholarships for local students, and environmental conservation efforts in the Adirondack Park.

Americade has become an essential economic driver for the Lake George region. The early June timing helps extend the tourist season, bringing an estimated $15 to 30 million in economic impact to local businesses.

Hotels, restaurants, and shops that might otherwise have a slow pre-summer week now find themselves fully booked.

Beyond the economic benefits, Americade has helped change public perceptions about motorcycle culture. The rally showcases the positive aspects of motorcycling by emphasizing safety, responsible riding, and community service.

As Americade approaches its fifth decade, it continues to evolve while staying true to its original vision. For many riders, the annual journey to Lake George has become a cherished tradition – a chance to reconnect with old friends, explore beautiful mountain roads, and celebrate the unique freedom of traveling on two wheels through one of America's most stunning landscapes.
