It’s an excellent sign that a cross-country skiing center is top-notch when you find out Olavi Hirvonen, a US Olympic skier of Finnish descent, designed it.

Hirvonen competed in the 1960 Squaw Valley winter Olympics and founded the Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center in Northville shortly afterward.  They offer 58 kilometers (31 miles) of trails for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. Trails are trackset with skating lanes, and most are one-way, giving skiers and snowshoers a comfortable and peaceful opportunity to enjoy the journey through gorgeous woodlands.

Finnish touches abound throughout the resort. Trails bear Finnish names like Olavin Uni (Olavi’s dream), Kippis (Cheers!), and Karhu Polku (bear path). The Finnish touches continue with their on-site, year-round lodging units with names like Tupas, Pohjan and Suksi. All accommodations are housekeeping units, which means they are complete with kitchens, heating stoves, linens, towels, bedrooms and private bathrooms.

Lapland Lake features an excellent ski school for skiers of all abilities and a retail shop including attire and rental equipment. Visitors can purchase grab-and-go sandwiches, soups and snacks at the Kuuma Feeding station. Winter-time overnight guests can also pre-order a catered dinner delivered to their lodging.

Beyond cross-country skiing, winter activities include:

  • Tubing

  • Snowshoeing

  • Ice-skating (weather permitting)

  • Reindeer Rallies featuring fun and games for Lil ADKers

  • Kick sledding

Daily trail conditions and other relevant information are posted on the Lapland Lake website.

Guests in the spring, summer and fall enjoy:

  • Swimming

  • Kayaking, canoeing and fishing

  • Hiking

  • Mountain biking

  • Rental bikes (please bring your own helmet)

When it comes to Lapland Lake Ski Center, we say “Mennään!”
