Argyle Cheese Farmer
A real farmer, making real cheese, yogurt, gelato and other good stuff.
We first stumbled across Argyle Cheese Farmer’s retail location in Hudson Falls by accident. You see, it was during COVID-times, and our dog needed grooming, and the only facility that would take us was in Fort Ann, almost at Granville. To kill some time while our prized pooch was being pampered, we used Google Maps to see what was in the vicinity, and that’s how we located the Argyle Cheese Farmer’s retail establishment in Hudson Falls. And we sure are glad we did.
The folks behind this dairy mecca have a long history in the area, producing some of the finest-tasting products from locally raised cows. We are addicted to their outstanding Greek-style yogurt and especially fond of their line of “sweet greek” yogurts in flavors like blueberry, chocolate mousse, chocolate raspberry, and honey.
They have an array of aged cheeses, like the “Mrs. Robinson,” which is a pasteurized cheese that came out of a cheese curd that was not behaving itself. Instead of curd, they added herbs, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme and pressed and aged the cheese. The result was an herbed sharp dry cheddar. Is it trying to seduce you? You bet it is.
Shoppers can also enjoy General Burgoyne's Smoke'n Cheddar, a traditional aged New York cheddar laced with a sharp bite from smoked flavors. The name is a nod to the British General, who was headquartered nearby during the American Revolution.
You may also want to try the Revival, a dry sharp cheddar based on an old Scottish cheese, Dunlop. The complex flavors give it a rich, smooth bite that will make you want more. Aged over a year to develop the distinctive flavor profile.
And that’s just a sampling of what is on offer in the modest shop on Burgoyne Avenue in Hudson Falls. On subsequent visits, we’ve picked up delicious baked goods, and don’t get us started on their gelato.
