The beautiful Adirondack Park, located in the heart of Upstate New York, boasts over 3,000 lakes and 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, making the region an angler's paradise.

In 2024, there will be six days anyone can fish for free without a license. Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement encouraging residents and visitors to cast a reel for free on the following dates:

  • February 17 to 18 (Presidents’ Day Weekend)

  • June 29 to 30

  • September 28 (National Hunting and Fishing Day)

  • November 11 (Veterans Day)

New York is blessed with an abundance of freshwater lakes, ponds, streams and rivers, allowing for memorable fishing experiences that increase tourism and benefit the economy.
— Gov. Kathy Hochul

The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to give people who might not fish a chance to try the rewarding sport of freshwater fishing at no cost, to introduce people to a new hobby, and to encourage people to support conservation by purchasing a New York State fishing license.

In addition to Free Fishing Days, DEC-approved free fishing clinics offer “learn to fish” opportunities. Visit the DEC website for the current list of scheduled events.

Even though anglers don’t need a license on Free Fishing Days, all other fishing regulations apply.

Visit the DEC website for more information on purchasing a license. Reminder: Little ADKers under 16 can always fish for free.
