Where in the ADK? Bald Mountain
This week’s “Where in the ADK?” comes from Old Forge, NY, in the Western Foothills. It’s Bald Mountain and the Rondaxe Fire Tower.
Bald Mountain is not considered one of the world-renowned Adirondack High Peaks. However, the views of the Fulton Chain of Lakes below, Blue Mountain Lake and the vista beyond Bald Mountain’s summit are just as spectacular as those from much higher elevations.
To reach the summit, hikers are treated to a lovely mile-long hike through the woods, with only 500’ feet of elevation gain, making this an excellent hike for families. And at only half a mile into the trail, hikers are rewarded with lovely views of nearby lakes. The path does get narrow, and footing can be rough, so wear sturdy shoes.
At the summit is Rondaxe Fire Tower, named for a nearby lake. Visitors can climb to its top. Fire towers were used to spot forest fires, and while technology has replaced the need for the towers, there are 25 or so that remain standing, and you can visit them today.
With incredible views, a relatively easy climb, and a great fire tower, this is one hike where the juice is worth the squeeze.
