Workers completed the highway almost 90 years ago, in 1936. It stands as a remarkable feat of engineering, winding its way up the fifth-highest peak in New York State. Whiteface's Ski Center is also renowned by winter sports enthusiasts. The mountain resort offers the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockie Mountains, making it a unique destination in the Northeast.
