Charlie Johns in Speculator: An Adirondack General Store
The store’s eponymous founder sold it in 1971 to the current owners, the Lane family, and it’s been family-owned and operated ever since.
Today, Charlie Johns Store is still very much the amiable hometown market Charlie opened in 1939. However, the owners expanded dramatically over the years to include a full deli and bakery, seasonal merchandise, gifts, clothing, ammo, camo, a large walk-in beer cooler, butcher, a lawn and garden center, camping supplies and True Value Hardware.
Charlie Johns is the kind of place you go in to purchase one thing, and you come out with five others.
Just last week, we stopped in to pick up some veggies for a salad (their produce is lovely) and left with a gift for a new baby, four books on the Adirondacks, and a freshly baked pie.
And you can charge your Electric Vehicle at the Adirondacks Speculator Region Chamber of Commerce, which shares a parking lot with Charlie Johns.
