Edgar Degas, the famous French artist who lived from 1834 to 1917, once expressed his desire to be both "illustrious and unknown." Despite his art gaining fame during his lifetime, Degas remained an enigmatic figure. He was a highly versatile artist, demonstrating excellence in various media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and photography.

Without a doubt, Degas was a skilled artist, and his frank depiction of women made him the subject of posthumous art historical debate, with some labeling him a misogynist.

Because of his sharp wit, many saw Degas as a cynic. However, the curators at the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls believe that Degas was one of the most astute observers of human nature since Rembrandt.

Despite being perceived as aloof and withholding, Degas was warm and loyal to his family and a wide circle of friends, which included some of the greatest writers and artists of his time.

Glens Falls’ Hyde Collection is currently hosting an exhibit, Edgar Degas, The Private Impressionist: Works on Paper by the Artist and his Circle, which contains a collection of Degas's works, including drawings, prints, photographs, monotypes, and one sculpture, all of which are from a private collection, which presents an opportunity to see pieces that aren’t readily available for public viewing.

The works cover three notable themes of his oeuvre: the human body, horse racing, and ballet.

The exhibition also includes over forty rare works on paper by Degas's contemporaries, such as Mary Cassatt, Paul Cézanne, and Gustave Moreau, which augment the exhibition. Visitors to The Hyde Collection can marvel at this expertly curated selection of Degas' works, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, all of which showcase his mastery of light, movement, and color.

The upcoming holidays present a perfect opportunity to take in this impressive exhibit. The Private Impressionist is a rare opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of Degas' artistic vision up close.
