Massawepie Trail
A beautiful hike through the pines, past lakes and ponds, and across marshes and mires.
At 900 acres, Massawepie Mire is the largest peatland bog in the state of New York. It is one of the most popular spots for birding in the ADK because it offers a variety of habitats – lakes, forests, ponds, marshes, brooks, etc. – for the little winged creatures to make their homes in.
For two-legged creatures, the Massawepie has a lot to offer, as well. Be aware, however, Massawepie Lake is part of a Boy Scout camp, so there is no public access from June 15 through August 15 when camp is in session. But there is plenty to explore and enjoy from September to May.
The Massawepie trail is level, making it an ideal hike/walk for multiple generations. The terrain varies, including dirt trails, pine-covered eskers (elevated sand/dirt ridges formed by glaciers), and boardwalks.
The 5.6-mile out-and-back trail takes hikers through beautiful forests, past scenic Massawepie Lake and some smaller ponds, and over bogs, mires, and wetlands.
During the winter months, visitors can ski, snowmobile, and snowshoe on the trails, as well.
