If you’ve been doing any research on the ADK, you’ve no doubt encountered the term “bark eater.” What is a “bark eater”? “Bark eater” is an English translation of the Mohican word “Adirondack,” a term the Mohawk once used for Algonquian-speaking tribes who were said to eat the inside of the bark of the white pine when food was scarce. The white man gave the mountains we know as the Adirondacks that name in 1838.

So now that we’ve got that out of the way...the Bark Eater Inn is a bed and breakfast inn with two secluded cabins surrounded by 200 acres of authentic Adirondack wildlife. The Inn’s website tells the history of the property which dates back to the 1700s, including its use as a stagecoach stop in the 1800s.
Guests today are treated to outstanding views, gorgeous gardens (in warm-weather months), and miles of trails for hiking, nordic skiing, and snowshoeing. Not to mention a spectacular breakfast that will not include the inside of the bark of any tree.
Visitors couldn’t be better situated to enjoy all the delights of the ADK. Keene is close to Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain, and many trailheads and waterways. The Inn offers newly renovated rooms, with amenities like:
Queen beds with plush down comforters and pillows
Matouk 100% cotton percale bedding

Several rooms can be configured into multi-room suites, perfect for families or a group traveling together.
