If you’ve been doing any research on the ADK, you’ve no doubt encountered the term “bark eater.”  What is a “bark eater”? The term is an English translation of the Mohican word “Adirondack,” a word the Mohawk once used for Algonquian-speaking tribes who were said to eat the inside of the bark of the white pine when food was scarce. The white man gave the mountains we know as the Adirondacks that name in 1838.
