After some disappointing warm weather and rain (a four-letter word in ski country), several resorts benefited from lake effect snow this week. Freezing temps are back, which means everyone has their snowmaking systems on full blast.
Temperatures are predicted to plummet over the next week, with blustery winds. Our favorite meteorologist predicts that wind chill values may register as low as -4 degrees F, which may cause frostbite in exposed areas.
While these are excellent snowmaking conditions, they remind us to cover up exposed skin, take frequent breaks inside ski lodges, and stay hydrated. Also, dress appropriately in warm, moisture-wicking layers (cotton can kill in cold weather).

This report is as of Friday afternoon, January 3. Ski trail conditions may change anytime due to weather, skier traffic, snowmaking, and other factors.
After a brief warm-up, Gore received 4” of fresh snow on Wednesday. With the current arctic blast, they are back to making snow. They will open the High Peaks Quad this weekend, opening 200 acres of terrain this year. Visit Gore’s website for the most current details.
Over the past week, Whiteface received 7” of new snow, with 2” in the last 24 hours. Snowmaking is on full blast, and their intrepid groomers have laid down fresh lines on over 90% of their terrain. Visit Whiteface’s website for current conditions.
West Mt. reports that 17 of its 35 trails are open with machine-groomed and packed-powder conditions. Their Tubing Park is open for business, too. Visit West’s website for the latest snow and ski conditions.
Oak Mountain Ski Area has nine of its 22 trails open and continues to make snow. They continue to benefit from recent lake effect snows. Visit Oak’s website for current trail conditions.
Titus Mountain, Malone, NY
Titus Mountain, home of the slopeside Skibana, reports 22 of 53 trails open on Friday with packed powder surfaces. They received 7” of snow and expect more. Visit Titus’s website for the latest conditions.
