Where in the ADK? OK Slip Falls
This week’s “Where in the ADK?” comes from the Central Adirondacks, between Indian Lake and North River. It’s OK Slip Falls and, at 250’, it’s one of the highest waterfalls in the Adirondacks.
The hike to OK Slip is one of the most popular in the area. But, it wasn’t until the summer of 2014 that a trail to the Falls opened. For the first time, hikers had public access to this gorgeous spot. It’s easy to see why OK Slip Falls has become a favorite spot for hiking in the Adirondacks.
The trail to the Falls is about 3 miles from the trailhead on Route 28, so that’s six miles roundtrip. Red maples, beeches, birches, aspens and white pines line the trail. Hikers will also see many wildflowers, beautiful mosses, and wild fungi. Be on the lookout for moose who populate the wetlands between Indian Lake and North River and frequently cross over the trail.
Once you reach OK Slip Falls, there is an extension of the trail that provides access to the Hudson. This is optional. It’s also a very strenuous hike.
OK Slip Falls is a popular snowshoe hike in winter. The frozen falls are a magnificent site.
Curious about how this spot got its name? A recent article in the Adirondack Almanack attempts to solve that mystery.
