Take Charge: Power Up Your Electric Vehicle

We’ve got the juice on EV charging in the ADK.

Residents and visitors to the Adirondacks treasure our region for its wild beauty, the miles of unspoiled terrain, being alone (or almost alone) in the woodlands and mountains, and the ability to escape the noise and pollution of many urban areas. And we all want to preserve the pristine quality of our beautiful waterways, woodlands, and fresh air (when Canada isn’t burning its forests).

Given its image as a vast, remote wilderness dotted with small towns and villages (there are no cities within the Adirondack Park), one might assume that charging an Electric Vehicle (EV)  in the mountains would be difficult,

Amping up resources for EV drivers in the ADK.

We’ve got good news for you. The charging infrastructure in the region has expanded rapidly in the last few years. And NY State recently designated funds to increase the number of chargers across the ADK.

Access to EV chargers is important for NY residents and attracts ADK visitors. In 2022, for every 1,000 people in the state, there were 6.23 registered plug-in vehicles. That may not sound like much, but that number was only 1.41 five years ago. That’s a 442% increase in EVs in NYS over five years.

Our neighbors, and frequent ADK visitors, have even higher EV adoption (source: InsideEVS.com).

EVs per thousand people:

  • Vermont 12.55

  • Washington, DC 11.57

  • New Jersey 9.80

  • Connecticut 9.54

  • National Average 8.66

  • Massachusetts 8.07

  • New Hampshire 7.13

So it’s imperative for our environment, climate and tourism that NY continues to expand its EV infrastructure.

Dude, where’s my car (charging station)?

To locate the nearest car charging station or plot the best options on your route, ADK travelers have many resources at their disposal.

Websites and Apps

  • PlugShare – Our Texas-based bestie and tech guru turned us on to this website and app. He used it to navigate his journey from Houston to the ADK and back again (sometimes in ludicrous mode).

  • OpenCharge – Another trusted source spotlit this open-source map maintained by a coalition of companies, nonprofits and users.

NYS Resources

  • NYS Thruway Authority is creating an expansive network of electric vehicle charging stations, crucial to increasing the use of zero-emission electric vehicles. Drivers can find over 50 EV charging stations from NYC to Albany and between Albany and Buffalo.

  • If you plan to visit a park or campground run by NYS DEC or Parks and Recreation Department, chances are there may be a charger. Check the NYS Parks website for more information.

Stewart’s Shops

  • We 🩷 Stewart’s. Great coffee, locally-sourced dairy products, dynamite shakes and ice cream, and more. Lots to enjoy while you charge your vehicle.

  • We also love that they’ve committed significantly to bringing EV charging to their shops.

  • Thanks to Stewart’s, travelers will find charging stations in places like Indian Lake, Long Lake, Port Henry, North Creek, Ausable Forks, Keene, Elizabethtown, Chestertown, Northville and more.

ADK Taste Recommendations

  • You already know that we love to share our favorite places to eat, shop, stay and things to do in the Adirondacks.

  • At the bottom of every listing are tags about the venue, including one for EV charging. Clicking on the tag will also reveal other places offering onsite or nearby charging.

Peace of mind for eco-friendly drivers.

Thanks to the growing number of EV charging stations, visitors to the Adirondacks can enjoy the full spectrum of the natural beauty on offer without worrying about the range of their electric vehicle or its negative impact on the environment.

With the EV charging network growing larger and stronger every year, the Adirondacks are on the trail to becoming one of the most EV-friendly travel destinations in the country.

Happy charging!
