Depot Theatre in Westport
A historic setting for top-rate theatrical productions.
Welcome to The Depot Theatre - the only theater in the Adirondacks that's legit with the Actors' Equity Association – the union for professional actors and stage managers in the United States.
Featuring professional-level theatrical talent in the Adirondacks.
Housed in a charming 1876 train station in Westport, NY, on the shores of Lake Champlain, The Depot is not just any theater—it’s a non-profit, professional theater. It is all about promoting and showcasing the performing arts in the Adirondacks. It brings professional theater artists—actors, directors, stage managers, choreographers and more—to the ADK.
We attended a recent performance, and the caliber of the talent and the facility knocked us out. The setting is intimate, and we would have been happy in any seat in the house. Those seats, by the way, are comfortable and less cramped than any Broadway theater we’ve been in.
The box office and refreshment stand are in the depot’s original waiting room. It’s beautifully preserved and adds to the overall enchanting environment of the theater.
An enthusiastic and energetic team staffs the theater, adding to the overall experience.
Breathing new life into a former train station.
Given that the theater is housed in the former train depot, it shouldn’t surprise patrons that it is on an active railroad track, and Amtrak is building a new passenger platform adjacent to the theater.
Should a train pass by during a performance, the house lights come up, and the actors freeze in place until the train passes. Which we think is kind of cool, but we’ve never experienced while attending a production.
The Depot Theatre stages performances during the summer. Check their website for the current list of productions.
We encourage you to hop on board and embark on a theatrical journey without leaving the station. Full credit – the theater’s apt tagline is “Take a journey without leaving the station.”
