ADKX Presents “The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier”

Scholar and author Amy Godine discusses her new book on the history of Black pioneers in the Adirondack Park.

The Adirondack Experience presents another chapter in its virtual series, ADKX “In The Adirondack Library,” featuring author Amy Godine and her new book on the history of African American settlers in the Adirondack mountains.

In “The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier,” author Amy Godine recounts the history of Black pioneers in the northern wilderness of upstate New York and documents the migration of African Americans to the Adirondacks from the late 1840s to the 1860s.

Godine will discuss the rich history of racial justice in the Adirondacks, including voter suppression, Gerrit Smith’s extraordinary gift of 120,000 acres of Adirondack land to 3,000 Black New Yorkers, and the on-the-ground experience of Black Adirondack pioneers.

This online virtual event is free. To register, visit the ADKX website.
