What is a total solar eclipse?
Solar eclipses are either total or annular, depending on the distance between the Sun, Earth, and the Moon. During total eclipses, the Moon completely covers the Sun. In annular eclipses, the Moon only partially covers the Sun, creating a ring of light in the sky.

In April of 2024, the U.S. will experience a total solar eclipse. It will pass over New York State and directly through the Adirondack Park.

Tips for viewing the Solar Eclipse safely.
Make sure you’re prepared on Eclipse Day. Organizers urge everyone to secure eclipse-viewing goggles in advance. Glasses are being sold at the Bessboro Shop (with all proceeds going back to the Westport-Wadhams Community Alliance), and glasses may be available at the Wadhams Library and the Westport Library. Other tips for preparedness:
Top off your tank ahead of time—with big crowds expected in the Adirondacks, traffic may be heavy.
As the sky darkens, temperatures may drop, so make sure you’re dressed appropriately.
